Milton Coarse Angling Club 03

Match 1> 30/3/03
was fished on the stables stretch of the Forth and Clyde canal (just passed the dead tree). The weather had been warm (12c to 15c) all week, with some night frosts. On the day the weather was warm and bright with a light right to left breeze 12 to 14 C.  The water was very clear, barges what barges! we could have done with one or two, to put a bit of colour in the water.
Tactics tried were chopped worm, bread punch, pinkie, chopped pinkie, caster, hemp. After all this effort not 1 fish decided to show its face and everyone blanked.

Match 2> 13/4/03
was fished at Lochburn Rd on the Forth and Clyde canal.  The weather had been warm (12c to 14c last 3 days), on the day the weather started of bright and sunny with a light breeze.  THIS! soon changed to overcast with a strong breeze and turned very cold.  The water a little coloured, and with two barges going through later on this helped.  It took over 2 hours for the first fish to be caught a small Roach (after the first barge). The pegs look clear of weed but just under the surface it was very weedy out to about 7mtrs.  Once a way was found to combat the wind and the weed (top 3 or whip, fishing 2 feet deep) lots of little Roach and Rudd were caught in the last hour and a half on pinkie with a little sloppy ground bait (7½oz won the match (30 to 40 mostly small Rudd).

Match 3> 27/4/03
was fished at Bishopbriggs sports centre. The weather had been very wet and on the day it was very windy
and cold. The water was a little coloured due to all the rain. there was a lot of small Roach 1 to 2oz and
the match was won by John Smoat with 1lb 8oz
Most of the fish were caught close in due to the strong wind and driving rain, Pinkie and maggot being the best bait with a little sloppy groundbait.

Match 4> 11/5/03
was fished at the Girlings. The weather had been wet windy and cold all week on the day of the match it was cold and windy and the water was clear. after a slow start 20 minutes to catch the first fish, but after a barge went through things picked up a bit and the
match was won by John Smoat with 1lb 9oz.
and second place was Charlie Roberts with 15oz.
usual canal tactics some sloppy ground bait and pinkie close in 5/6/7 metres to catch roach in the 1 to 2 ozs

Match 5> 1/6/03
The match was won by John Smoat with 8lb.
second was Jim Watson with 7lb 8oz
third Charlie Roberts with 6lb 4oz.

Match 6> 15/6/03

The match was won by John Smoat with 13oz of small Roach.
second was John Keir.
and third was Jim Watson.
Tactics sloppy ground bait and loose feed pinkie. Due to the weather the fish were moving in and out the swims and were very easily spooked, and with the number of Pike in the area it proved to be a very hard match for this time of year.

Match 8> 13/7/03
Was won by John Smoat with 5lb 6oz.
second was Willie Harper with 5lb 1oz.
third was Jim Watson with 3lb 6oz.
fourth was Charlie Roberts with 2lb 15 oz.
fifth was John Keir with 2lb 3oz.
last but not least was Billy Brownlee with 1lb 3oz.
on a very warm and sunny day. Perch were the predominant catch but a few good Roach in the 12oz to 1lb mark were also caught.

Match 9> 27/7/03
Was fished at Firhill basin. The match started well with a fish a chuck, small Roach and Rudd. This was not to continue. The last 3 hours of the math were very slow.
The winner of the match was John Smoat with 2lb.
2nd was Willie Harper with 1lb 7oz.
3rd was Charlie Roberts with 14oz.
4th was John Keir with 7oz.
Jim Watson left before the all in, as he had a disagreement with the peg he was trying to clear out, the peg won by breaking his landing net handle and pulling him into the water. luckily it was not to deep, and he got away with a soaking and a gallon of water in each welly.
(BEEN THERE--) a quote from the Chairman John Smoat.

2nd Charlie Roberts 10lb 15oz
3rd John Keir 10lb 1/2oz

Both days of the match were fish a chuck at the beginning with small Rudd, as more feed went in, Skimmer Bream started to be caught 2/4 oz with a couple of 2lb better fish. On day two the weights were down a little on day one, as people spent more time targeting the bigger bream. I think if not fishing a match Fishing for the Bream with chopped worm and caster would produce a lot of the better Bream and a good weight
As is the norm at Torwood Dave and Veronica were the perfect hosts and great food and lots of liquid e.g. CIDER Was drunk. (well it was very warm) and a great time was had by all.
THANK YOU ALL AT TORWOOD. From all the boys .
